What is a Frame Garden?

Frame Gardens are a fairly simple premise, they create a frame around your garden or act as a border to divide up your outdoor space. In much the same way you frame a picture, the frame itself shouldn’t be the centre of attention, but instead bring your focus to the centrepiece, whether that be a lawn, outdoor seating area or BBQ.

What is It?

What is a Japanese Garden?

A Japanese-inspired garden is one that incorporates some of the elements of Japanese landscaping. In this case, we focused on using plants common in Japanese outdoor spaces, Tori gate-shaped arches, decked areas and the use of light coloured rocks, to be reminiscent of a zen garden.

The Brief

Our clients had a very large garden and wanted us to help make an unloved section serve more of a purpose. The area in question contained a summer house that they used very frequently, however, it was overshadowed by a very dominant tree that made what should have been a sunny summer house into a damp and dingy one.

Their aim was to encourage more visits to that end of the garden by creating a Japanese-inspired space that would fit in with the rest of their garden. They wanted a low-maintenance garden that would look good all year round and retain the summer house that they already loved.

The Solution

Having previously worked with the clients, by creating a relaxing space in their front garden, so we already had an understanding of what they wanted and the styles they liked. We developed a concept plan based on the idea of a low-maintenance Japanese garden, and by removing the old tree, we would be able to let in more sunlight.

The Outcome

This project was such an exciting milestone for our team. Although the build was quite technically challenging, encouraging us to explore new materials and detailed masonry (all of which was discussed with the client prior), the end result honestly exceeded anything we’d hoped for.

What caught us most off guard was the calming atmosphere it creates. The blend of stone, wood, and minimalist planting fosters a wonderful sense of stillness and tranquillity. Along the way, we’ve gained new skills, and our clients now have their own private retreat, a little escape that feels completely disconnected from the outside world.
